How big is crypto adoption in Vietnam really?

Vietnam is often mentioned as one of the world’s major crypto adoption markets.

But there’s a problem:

Most people look at the headline ranking and stop there.

The more interesting question is:

What does adoption actually look like on the ground?

In Vietnam, crypto isn’t limited to tech people.

You can find active communities around:

→ Bitcoin

→ Futures trading

→ Airdrops

→ DeFi

→ Memecoins

→ New L1/L2 ecosystems

And Telegram remains a major part of how information spreads.

A project can go from relatively unknown to widely discussed among Vietnamese users surprisingly quickly.

That’s why I think Vietnam should be viewed not just as an “adoption ranking.”

It’s a highly connected retail market with strong crypto-native communities.

Crypto adoption in Vietnam is massive, ranking 4th globally in the 2025 Chainalysis Global Crypto Adoption Index.

Key Metrics and Scale

• User Base: An estimated 17 million Vietnamese people (roughly 1 in every 6 citizens) own or hold cryptocurrency.

• Demographics: Adoption heavily skews young, with about 70% of crypto owners aged 18 to 34.

• Transaction Volume: Annual on-chain crypto transactions involving Vietnamese users range between $220 billion and $230 billion, averaging over $600 million per day. This activity makes Vietnam one of the top three markets in the Asia-Pacific region.

• Market Drivers: High engagement is fueled by a tech-savvy youth population, strong interest in GameFi and play-to-earn ecosystems (such as the origins of Axie Infinity), using digital assets as an inflation hedge, and cross-border remittances. Bitcoin and major stablecoins remain the most widely held assets.

Legal and Regulatory Shift

• Property Recognition: Effective January 1, 2026, under the Law on Digital Technology Industry 2025, Vietnam officially recognizes digital assets as a form of digital property.

• Not Legal Tender: Cryptocurrencies are not recognized as legal tender or a lawful payment method for everyday goods and services within the country.

• Pilot Schemes and Crackdowns: Hanoi has moved to bring the largely offshore and gray-market activity under official oversight through a five-year pilot scheme and controlled tech sandboxes (such as in Da Nang). Regulators have also signaled plans to restrict or phase out unauthorized trading on foreign-based platforms once domestic licensed alternatives are established.(Vietnam Crypto Exchange)
